Preparing the big event

Women have been giving birth for thousands and thousands of years, why do we now have to “prepare” for this event? We all have heard stories about women who have been told to stay in their bed to prevent any complications during and after their pregnancies. I’m sure you have you
own “Grand-ma stories” too… New inventions are very rare in our days but improving things is making our lives easier and gives us a better quality of life.

The research and technology of today helps to prevent or avoid many complications during and after pregnancy. Research on exercise and pregnancy showed to be very beneficial for the future mommy and for the fetus as well. Pregnant women who work sitting down, standing for prolonged periods of time, who rarely do or don’t exercise are more prone to discomforts during their pregnancies;

  • Swelling
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Backaches
  • Bad posture
  • Other…
  • These discomforts often follow the pregnancy during post-partum period

Preparing our pregnancy, labour and delivery is of major importance. The muscles sollicitated during labour and delivery need to be trained differently than in regular non-pregnant state. For example; « Why avoid sit-ups during pregnancy? »

Apart from compressing the inferior vena cava, this exercise engages the rectus abdominis. The muscle we want to train is the transverse abdominis. This muscle will help during the pushing stage of the delivery.

Also, preparing for life with a newborn baby is essential. Training the back muscles will help to avoid the rounding of the shoulders. Because of the enlarged breasts, it will prevent back pain due to bad posture. Did you know that the majority of women suffer from incontinence after giving birth? The pelvic muscles need to be prepared.

How often will a pregnant mom visit her doctor? Once a month. How often will she visit
her specialized trainer? An average of twice a week. Her many questions and uncertainties during pregnancy and after giving birth need to be answered RIGHT NOW. Her specialized trainer should be there to answer her needs. *It is important to choose a trainer who has the training for pre and post-natal fitness as well as experience with the many sides of motherhood. During the training sessions, the specialized trainer will bring new themes about her state of health. This helps to reassure and prepare for labour and delivery. Pregnancy is only 40 weeks so an agenda is most helpful.

The reasons to train during and after pregnancy are countless and there are so many benefits. Here is a list of a few advantages to be active during pregnancy:
